Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to the most common questions about Rottweiler breeding, care, and our services
Breeding & Genetics
What genetic testing do you perform on your breeding dogs?
All our breeding Rottweilers undergo comprehensive genetic testing for common breed-specific conditions including hip and elbow dysplasia (OFA certified), cardiac evaluation, and DNA testing for conditions like Juvenile Laryngeal Paralysis & Polyneuropathy (JLPP) and von Willebrand's Disease. We provide full documentation to prospective puppy owners.
How do you select breeding pairs?
Our breeding pairs are selected based on a comprehensive evaluation of health clearances, temperament assessments, conformation to breed standards, genetic diversity, and proven lineage. We prioritize health, temperament, and breed standard compliance over any single characteristic.
What is your breeding philosophy?
We believe in quality over quantity. Our philosophy centers on improving the Rottweiler breed through ethical, selective breeding that emphasizes health, temperament, and adherence to breed standards. We typically have only 1-2 litters per year to ensure each puppy receives optimal care and socialization.
Do you breed for specific colors or markings?
We breed for health and temperament first, with adherence to the AKC breed standard. While proper Rottweiler markings are important, we don't prioritize rare colors or non-standard markings that sometimes come with health implications. Our focus is on producing structurally sound, mentally stable dogs with correct breed characteristics.
Puppy Information
At what age do puppies go to their new homes?
Puppies typically go to their new homes at 8-9 weeks of age. By this time, they have received initial vaccinations, been dewormed multiple times, and have undergone crucial socialization with their littermates and humans. We also begin basic crate training and housebreaking foundations.
What vaccinations and health checks do puppies receive?
Before leaving, each puppy receives a thorough veterinary examination, first vaccinations (DHPP), deworming treatments, and microchipping. They come with a health certificate, vaccination record, and detailed care instructions. We also provide a 72-hour health guarantee and a longer genetic health guarantee.
How are puppies socialized before going home?
Our puppies are raised in our home with constant human interaction. They experience various household sounds, surfaces, gentle handling, and introduction to different people (including children). We follow Puppy Culture or similar protocols to build confidence and resilience during their critical development period.
Do you provide pedigree papers and registration?
Yes, all our puppies come with AKC registration papers. We provide a three-generation pedigree showing the lineage of your puppy. Breeding rights may be limited to certain contracts, and all puppies sold as pets are required to be spayed/neutered unless specifically agreed otherwise.
Can I meet the puppy's parents?
In most cases, yes. We encourage prospective families to visit and meet at least the mother (dam) when puppies are old enough for visits (usually after 5-6 weeks). The father (sire) may also be available if he is owned by us. We provide photos and videos of both parents regardless.
Care & Training
What type of food do you recommend for Rottweilers?
We recommend high-quality large breed puppy formulas for growing Rottweilers and premium adult formulas for mature dogs. We provide detailed feeding guidelines and a starter bag of the food the puppy is accustomed to. Proper nutrition is crucial for this breed's joint development and overall health.
How much exercise does a Rottweiler need?
Rottweilers are energetic working dogs that require regular exercise. Puppies need controlled exercise to protect developing joints, while adults typically need 60-90 minutes of activity daily. Mental stimulation through training, puzzle toys, and tasks is equally important for this intelligent breed.
Are Rottweilers good with children and other pets?
Well-bred, properly socialized Rottweilers can be excellent with children and other pets when raised together. However, their size and strength require supervision around small children. Early socialization and training are essential. We assess each puppy's temperament to match them with appropriate families.
What training approach do you recommend for Rottweilers?
We recommend positive reinforcement training methods with consistency and clear leadership. Rottweilers respond well to reward-based training and need early socialization and obedience training. We provide basic training resources and recommend professional training classes, especially for first-time Rottweiler owners.
How do I prepare my home for a Rottweiler puppy?
Prepare by puppy-proofing your home (securing chemicals, removing small objects), establishing a designated space with crate and bedding, purchasing appropriate-sized food/water bowls, quality puppy food, chew toys, grooming supplies, and scheduling your first veterinary appointment. We provide a comprehensive puppy preparation checklist.
Purchase Process
What is your process for selecting a puppy?
We begin with an application and conversation to understand your family, experience, and lifestyle. Once approved, you're added to our waiting list. When puppies are born, we provide updates and conduct temperament evaluations at 7 weeks to help match each puppy with the most suitable family based on personality and needs.
Do you have a waiting list for puppies?
Yes, we typically maintain a waiting list for upcoming litters. We recommend getting on the list early as we have limited litters each year. Placement on the list requires a completed application and deposit once we confirm a pregnancy. We keep waiting list families regularly updated.
What is included in the purchase price?
The price includes: AKC registration, health certificate from our veterinarian, first vaccinations and deworming, microchip, 30 days of pet insurance, starter kit with food and care items, detailed care instructions, lifetime breeder support, health guarantees, and in some cases, delivery within a certain radius.
Do you offer shipping or delivery options?
We prefer and recommend personal pickup whenever possible. However, we do offer ground transport with USDA-certified transporters for longer distances or can arrange flight nanny service. All shipping is at the buyer's expense and arranged with professional pet transport services we trust.
What is your deposit and payment policy?
We require a non-refundable deposit to hold a puppy once selected. The balance is due before or at pickup. We accept various payment methods including cash, bank transfer, and certain secure payment platforms. Full payment details are provided in our puppy contract.
Do you provide a health guarantee?
Yes, we offer a comprehensive health guarantee that covers genetic disorders for a specified period. The guarantee requires timely veterinary care, proper nutrition, and adherence to our care guidelines. Details are outlined in our puppy contract, which we encourage you to review carefully.
Health & Lifespan
What is the average lifespan of a Rottweiler?
With proper care, nutrition, and responsible breeding, Rottweilers typically live 9-12 years. Some can live even longer. Factors affecting lifespan include genetics, diet, exercise, preventive healthcare, and maintaining a healthy weight to reduce stress on joints.
What common health issues should I be aware of?
Responsible breeding has reduced many health issues, but potential concerns include hip/elbow dysplasia, cardiac conditions, certain cancers, and bloat (GDV). We screen for all common conditions in our breeding stock and provide guidance on preventive care, including proper feeding practices to minimize bloat risk.
Should Rottweilers be spayed/neutered, and if so, when?
For pets not intended for breeding, we recommend spaying/neutering after physical maturity (typically 18-24 months for Rottweilers) to allow proper hormonal development for joint and bone health. This timing should be discussed with your veterinarian based on your dog's individual development.
Breeder Support
What kind of support do you offer after purchase?
We provide lifetime breeder support. This includes guidance on training, nutrition, health questions, and behavioral issues. We're always available for consultation and welcome updates about our puppies throughout their lives. We also have a private community for our puppy families to connect and share experiences.
What is your policy if I can no longer care for my Rottweiler?
Our contract requires that if you cannot keep your Rottweiler for any reason, at any point in its life, you must contact us first. We will either take the dog back or help arrange placement. We are committed to the lifelong wellbeing of every dog we breed and never want them to end up in shelters.
Can I contact other families who have puppies from you?
With their permission, we can connect you with some of our puppy families. Many are happy to share their experiences. We also have testimonials and can sometimes arrange for you to meet local families with dogs from previous litters during your visit.
